Surviving Spouses

Dependency & Indemnity Compensation (DIC) and survivor benefits — help understanding what you may be owed and what you need to move forward.

Surviving Spouse Benefits

Dependency & Indemnity Compensation — you may be owed more than you know

If your spouse passed away due to a service-connected condition — or was rated 100% Permanent & Total for an extended period before passing — you may be entitled to monthly DIC payments from the VA.

This benefit is one of the most commonly missed and never filed. Many surviving spouses don't know they qualify, or they were never told. We help you understand your eligibility and what you need to move forward.

Monthly Tax-Free Payments

DIC provides ongoing monthly compensation paid directly to the surviving spouse — tax free.

10-Year P&T Rule

If the veteran was rated 100% Permanent & Total for 10 or more years before death, the spouse may qualify even if the cause of death wasn't service-connected.

Children & Dependent Parents

Dependent children and parents of the deceased veteran may also be entitled to DIC benefits.

Combinable With Other Benefits

DIC can often be combined with Survivor Benefit Plan (SBP) payments and other VA survivor programs.
